What Are Dentures? 

Dentures are removable dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth and restore oral function. Dentures usually consist of porcelain or plastic teeth set in a pink acrylic material (the pink acrylic is used to replicate gum tissue that surrounds the teeth). A full denture rests solely on the edentulous gum ridges (and hard palate for the top denture). The acrylic and teeth support the lips and face, as well as provide a surface for chewing and speaking. Dentures often require regular maintenance, including daily cleaning and periodic adjustments for comfort and effectiveness as the mouth’s shape can change over time.

Most denture-wearing patients have little problems with their upper denture because of the “suction cup effect” it has onto the upper jaw. Lower dentures, however, do not have this suction cup effect and tend to dislodge more often from tongue movement and eating. In cases where the residual gum ridges have been lost (resorbed), the dentures can be supported by dental implants, creating much greater support and retention.

Who Is a Candidate for Dentures? 

Candidates for dentures typically include individuals who: 

• Have lost several or all of their teeth due to decay, injury, or periodontal disease. 
• Experience significant difficulties with eating or speaking due to missing teeth. 
• Seek to improve facial structure and appearance negatively affected by the loss of teeth. 
• Desire a removable dental appliance as a cost-effective alternative to implants or bridges. 

Traditional Dentures vs. Implant Dentures

Traditional dentures are removable devices designed to replace missing teeth. They are typically held in place through a “suction cup effect” or an adhesive, which often makes them a more cost-effective and quicker solution for tooth replacement. However, they may become loose over time or dislodged due to daily activities such as eating. On the other hand, implant dentures are securely anchored into the jawbone using dental implants. This method can not only provide a stable fit but also helps maintain jawbone integrity. While implant dentures offer numerous benefits, they tend to cost more and they require a more invasive installation process.

How Is the Dentures Procedure Performed?

The dentures procedure usually begins with a consultation where one of our dentists can evaluate your oral health and discuss suitable denture options. Fabrication of full upper and lower dentures involves impressions for proper customization. Temporary denture models may be fitted to ensure comfort and proper bite alignment during a few try-in appointments. The final dentures are crafted using the selected materials based on the approved model and, if needed, adjustments may be made during the final fitting. Additional appointments might be necessary to refine the fit as you adjust to your new dentures. The entire process typically takes about four to six weeks. 

How Long Do Dentures Last?

A new set of dentures generally lasts for 5 to 10 years before they need to be replaced, but their lifespan can vary based on several factors. Regular wear and tear, changes in the mouth’s shape due to bone and gum changes, and the material quality of the dentures can affect their durability. Proper care, including daily cleaning, proper storage, and avoiding hard or sticky foods, can extend their lifespan. Regular dental check-ups are essential to adjust, reline, or repair dentures as needed, ensuring they remain comfortable and functional. Eventually, replacing dentures becomes necessary to maintain oral health, functionality, and aesthetics; however, dentures do typically need to be relined periodically once every year or two depending on how quickly the gum tissue changes underneath the denture.
