Millions of people in America have fears and anxieties about visiting the dentist. In some cases, dental phobias even keep them from attaining necessary dental work. Sedation dentistry, also known as “sleep” dentistry, is a way for you to overcome your fears of the dentist and feel more relaxed and comfortable when you have treatment. Our dentists offer a number of sedation dentistry techniques that can put you in a very relaxed state. Some of our options, such as oral conscious sedation and I-V sedation, make it possible for you to undergo treatment without even realizing it.
Sedation dentistry techniques can reduce your fears and anxieties associated with needles, instruments, sounds, and smells commonly associated with the dentist’s office. With sedation dentistry, our dental team can alleviate your anxieties and provide you with the care you need to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Pomerado Cosmetic Dentistry now offers conscious sedation dentistry. Oral sedation involves a small pill taken before your treatment that allows you to comfortably complete all levels of the dental procedure while conscious, but in a more tranquil, relaxed state of mind. You will be able to communicate with our dental team throughout your treatment; however, you will be so relaxed that you will likely not even know the procedure has taken place until it’s finished.
You deserve the healthy smile you’ve always wanted and the most comfortable, stress-free experience possible in dentistry. Please don’t put off taking care of your oral health issues any longer because of fear and anxiety!
What are the benefits of oral conscious sedation?
For those adult patients who have extremely sensitive teeth, bad gag reflexes, difficulty getting numb, a fear of needles, past traumatic dental experiences, or dental anxiety, oral conscious sedation can relieve you of these issues during treatment. This technique does not involve I-Vs or other methods designed to put patients into a deep sleep. It simply relaxes you so much that you should feel no pain or discomfort during the procedure, ultimately helping to reduce your anxiety and have a more pleasant treatment experience.
How does it work?
About one hour before your scheduled treatment, you will take the oral conscious sedation pill. During the procedure, your vital signs will be monitored at all times to make sure everything is running smoothly. Again, you will be conscious and able to talk with our dental team throughout the process; however, you will be extremely relaxed and should not feel any pain or anxiety. You should arrange for someone to bring you to our office and take you home after treatment since it takes a little while for the effects of oral conscious sedation to wear off.

I-V sedation is typically used for more complex dental procedures and for patients who suffer from extreme dental anxiety. This technique will put you in a state of total unconsciousness – you will not be aware that the procedure is taking place, and you will be completely asleep during treatment. Our dentists work with an experienced dental anesthesiologist who will be monitoring your progress to make sure everything is running smoothly during the procedure. It’s important to remember that you will be very groggy once the treatment is complete, and the effects of the anesthesia will take awhile to wear off – so it is necessary to arrange for someone to take you home afterward.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas” is a frequently performed dental technique that allows you to feel very relaxed during treatment. This technique will not put you to sleep; however, it is not uncommon for patients to drift into a light sleep while the procedure is performed. Nitrous oxide is breathed in through the nose, and typically takes effect after about 20 seconds. Certain medical conditions may not allow some patients from having nitrous oxide. Our dentists will talk with you more about this technique and determine if this is a good option for your needs. Patients who undergo nitrous oxide sedation typically do not experience any after-effects, and do not need an extensive recovery period before going home.
